Trastevere historical facts
The Trastevere district takes its name from the Latin root Trans Tiberim meaning beyond the Tiber. Until the Augustan period the area was considered out of town and the Janiculum hill above it served as a natural defensive bastion, then it was annexed to the rest of the city, in Roman Aurelian era.
The Trastevere neighborhood was considered a hostile shore because it was inhabited by the Etruscans. In the Republican era Trastevere was a bustling port populated by sailors and people of the port
At the beginning of the 15th century the narrow streets were paved with bricks and thereafter with the famous cobblestones . As you walk through the neighborhood you will be impressed by the maze of alleys that suddenly open into beautiful squares with wonderful 15th century buildings.
